Course objectives
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of:
- Identifying areas that constitute confined spaces
- Complying with site and equipment safety requirements
- Complying with the entry and exit procedures, risks and regulations
- Types of air contaminants and toxic gases
- Identifying the limitations of breathing apparatus
- Identifying equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
- Complying with site isolation and site control responsibilities and authorities
- Locations of safety data sheets (SDS) information and application
- Using confined space and industry terminology
Demonstrate skills in the following:
- Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- Demonstrate completion of entering and working in confined spaces that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
- Obtain appropriate entry permit and instructions for performing work in confined space
- Interpret and apply safe work method statements
- Apply tagging and lock out
- Select, wear and care for PPE applicable to all tasks and environment identified
- Enter the confined space
- Use atmospheric monitoring devices prior to entering the confined space
- Work in the confined space
- Use atmospheric monitoring devices during confined space activity
- Apply safe materials handling methods
- Exit the confined space
- Remove tagging and lock out
On successful completion students will be issued with:
Statement of Attainment in MSMPER205 Enter confined space; MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit; MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres; RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces -
Course assessment
Students will be assessed to determine their competency in these courses both theoretically and practically.
The theory assessment consists of multiple choice and short answer questions.
The practical assessment will require students to prepare and plan for entry and work in an actual or simulated confined space and leave the space safely.
